Academico Viseu turned pressure into a comeback win

Academico Viseu beat Rio Ave 2-1 after trailing at half-time, with two goals in eight minutes turning the match around. The comeback was built on a sharper second-half response and decisive finishing, but the underlying numbers tell a more mixed story: Rio Ave had the better expected-goal figure and more shots inside the box.

HOW IT UNFOLDED

A quick response changed the direction of the match

Rio Ave had more of the ball and went in front in the 38th minute. Miguel Patricio scored from João Tomé's assist, giving the visitors a lead they carried into the break. Academico Viseu had not been shut out of the contest: their 13 shots were their second-highest total across 10 matches, while their five on target ranked third.

The home response came after three changes between the 64th and 65th minutes, while Academico Viseu were still a goal behind. Soufiane Messeguem equalised in the 69th minute, assisted by André Clóvis. Eight minutes later Clóvis scored the winner, with Alejandro Mestanza providing the assist. The scoreline had flipped before Rio Ave made its first change, and the visitors could not restore their lead.

THE GOALS

Two goals, and a lead that lasted only until the late push

Rio Ave's opener arrived in the 38th minute. João Tomé set up Miguel Patricio, who scored the goal that separated the teams at half-time. It gave the away side a reward for a first half in which it had enjoyed more possession. The lead also left Academico Viseu with a clear task after the break: turn their shots into a goal before Rio Ave could build on its advantage.

The equaliser gave the match its first major change of direction. André Clóvis assisted Soufiane Messeguem in the 69th minute, bringing Academico Viseu level. Then Alejandro Mestanza assisted Clóvis in the 77th minute to complete the turnaround. The two goals came from different contributors, and both linked the home side's attacking players to the decisive actions. Rio Ave had to chase the game after that, while Academico Viseu could protect the lead it had just made.

Academico Viseu

More shots than usual, but most came from outside

Academico Viseu found a way to win despite having 45 per cent possession, almost exactly in line with their 45.3 per cent average. Their 13 shots were well above the 10.2 average and ranked second across 10 matches. Five on target also beat the 3.6 average, placing third. Yet only five attempts came from inside the box, below the 6.2 average and ranked eighth. Eight shots from outside the box help explain why a busy attacking display did not translate into a higher expected-goal figure.

Their expected goals were 0.93, only slightly above the 0.9 average, and ranked third across the eight matches compared on that measure. The five corners were a season high across 10 matches, but the chances still had to be finished: Clóvis and Messeguem supplied the goals. Ewerton made three saves, while Academico Viseu conceded once. The home team did not dominate every measure; its better finishing decided a contest in which the shot locations leave room for questions about chance quality.

Rio Ave

Rio Ave built chances but could not hold the advantage

Rio Ave's 55 per cent possession was above its 46.9 per cent average and ranked third across 10 matches. Its 12 shots were also a season high, and five on target ranked third. Most strikingly, eight efforts came from inside the box: the highest total across those 10 matches and well above the 3.7 average. The 1.14 expected goals were the second-highest figure across the eight matches compared, against an average of 0.72. Those numbers show a side that created promising opportunities, not one that simply sat back after scoring.

The problem was that this attacking output produced only Miguel Patricio's goal. Rio Ave's goalkeeper, Ennio van der Gouw, made three saves, but Academico Viseu still scored twice. Rio Ave's six corners were above its average of four and ranked second, adding to the evidence of a productive attack. The defensive outcome was much less satisfying: the visitors lost after leading at half-time. The gap between their expected-goal advantage and the final result came down to finishing at both ends, rather than a lack of chances.

Who stood out

The three highest-rated players on each side. The rating is out of 10 and grades everything a player did in the match; the small figure beside it is how far above or below that player’s own average for the season it was, so a 7.2 from a player who usually scores 6.4 is a big night, and green or red says which way.

THE PLAYERS

Clóvis and Patricio beat their own season levels

André Clóvis was central to Academico Viseu's comeback, scoring once and assisting once. His rating of 8.68 was 1.84 above his season average of 6.84. Soufiane Messeguem also exceeded his own level: his 7.43 rating was 0.59 above his 6.84 average, alongside the equalising goal. Alejandro Mestanza supplied the winner's assist, though his rating of 6.55 was 0.14 below his 6.69 average. The match contribution and the rating comparison do not tell exactly the same story for every player.

For Rio Ave, Miguel Patricio scored and rated 7.66, which was 1.05 above his 6.61 average. João Tomé's assist came with a rating 1.07 above his 6.17 average. Diogo Nascimento rated 6.79, 0.26 above his 6.53 average, and Ennio van der Gouw's 6.62 was 0.59 above his 6.03 average. By contrast, Jalen Blesa rated 5.69 against a 7.19 average, a drop of 1.5. His rating was the clearest negative comparison among Rio Ave's listed players, in a match where the attack created enough to expect more than one goal.

DESERVED OR LUCKY

The score favoured Academico Viseu; the chance count did not

Expected goals leaned towards Rio Ave: 1.14 to Academico Viseu's 0.93, an expected margin of minus 0.21 for the home team. The actual margin was plus one, and the finishing gap was 1.07. In plain terms, Academico Viseu scored more than its chances suggested, while Rio Ave scored less than its own figure suggested. The result was therefore not backed by the expected-goal balance, even though the home side had the better finish.

The market measure points in a very different direction. The single bookmaker recorded a 98.7 per cent probability for an Academico Viseu win, with 1.3 per cent for a draw and zero for a Rio Ave win. Academico Viseu did win, so that assessment matched the outcome, while expected goals favoured the visitors. The two measures disagree: one aligned with the result, the other with Rio Ave's chance quality. That makes the comeback a deserved result in terms of what happened, but a less convincing one if judged only by the chances created.

WHAT NEXT

The next test is turning volume into better chances

Academico Viseu can take confidence from overturning a half-time deficit, and from producing their second-highest shot total across 10 matches. But the five efforts inside the box, ranked eighth, show why the win should not hide the need for more dangerous attempts. The 0.93 expected goals were close to their average, despite the 13 shots. Rio Ave, meanwhile, has evidence that its attacking approach can generate chances: its inside-box total was a season best, and its expected goals ranked second across the eight matches compared.

For Rio Ave, the question is how to make that chance quality count and how to keep a lead after scoring first. For Academico Viseu, the challenge is whether they can make a high shot count more efficient by bringing more attempts into the box. Both teams had three saves from their goalkeepers, so the match was not decided by a one-sided goalkeeping display. The details worth following are clear:

  • Whether Academico Viseu raises its shots inside the box from five, against a 6.2 average.
  • Whether Rio Ave converts more of its eight shots inside the box, against a 3.7 average.
  • Whether Academico Viseu can keep producing shots on target above its 3.6 average.
