Academico Viseu win despite Estoril’s stronger chances
Estoril had more shots on target and the higher expected-goals figure, but Academico Viseu found the decisive finish late on.
Academico Viseu beat Estoril 2-1, though the scoreline disguises how much the visitors threatened. Estoril had nine shots on target to Academico Viseu’s six and a higher expected-goals figure. Yet Academico Viseu scored twice, the second coming in the 88th minute, while Ewerton’s eight saves helped protect the lead.
HOW IT UNFOLDED
A narrow lead, then a late answer
Academico Viseu took the lead in the 29th minute when Cihan Kahraman scored, assisted by Anthony Correia. That put the home team ahead at half-time, but it did not shut Estoril out. Estoril made a change at the break, bringing on Nail Omerović for Milan Robin, and levelled through Rafik Guitane in the 56th minute. João Carvalho provided the assist.
The equaliser changed the game from a home lead to a contest with both teams needing another goal. Academico Viseu made two changes in the 67th minute, with Alejandro Mestanza and Nils Mortimer replacing Kahraman and Lorougnon Gohi. Mestanza then assisted Soufiane Messeguem’s winner in the 88th minute. The decisive spell was brief: Estoril had restored parity, but Academico Viseu made its late opportunity count.

THE GOALS
Three finishes, and one that settled it
Kahraman’s opener came from an exchange between two Academico Viseu players who later shaped the result in different ways: Correia supplied the assist, and Kahraman finished. It gave the home side a lead to defend, and Kahraman’s goal was not an isolated contribution. His movement and passing helped Academico Viseu build attacks, while Correia’s delivery also made the first breakthrough possible.
Estoril’s response was direct and useful. Carvalho set up Guitane’s goal in the 56th minute, bringing the visitors level after their half-time change. That goal matched Estoril’s wider attacking threat: they finished with 15 shots and nine on target. But the match’s last scoring move belonged to Academico Viseu. Mestanza, introduced in the 67th minute, assisted Messeguem, whose goal restored the home lead late enough to leave Estoril little time to answer. The two assists came from players who entered after the match had been levelled.

Academico Viseu
More shots, but not enough clear reward
Academico Viseu’s best work was turning possession into a season-high 15 shots, with six on target. Its 51 per cent possession was its third-highest figure across eight matches so far, and the shot total ranked first across those eight. That was a more active attacking display than its average of 10 shots. But the quality measure offered a caution: Academico Viseu’s expected goals were 0.81, below its average of 0.90 and its third figure across six matches compared.
The split between seven shots inside the box and eight from outside helps explain why the volume did not bring a larger expected-goals return. Academico Viseu still made its chances count twice, and that is a real strength of this performance; it should not hide the difference between shooting often and creating high-value opportunities. At the other end, Ewerton made eight saves. That workload shows how much Estoril tested the defence, and his contribution mattered to the result. Academico Viseu also committed 24 fouls, its highest total across eight matches, against an average of 14.38. The win was built on finishing and goalkeeping, but the foul count points to a less controlled side of the performance.
Estoril
Estoril created enough to take more from the match
Estoril’s attacking numbers make the defeat hard to explain as a lack of threat. The visitors had 15 shots, their third-highest total across eight matches, and nine on target, their best figure over those eight. Ten attempts came from inside the box, the second-highest count in that comparison. Their expected goals reached 1.42, their best across six matches compared and well above their 0.95 average. Estoril did not simply have the ball; it found routes to test the goalkeeper.
Guitane’s equaliser and Carvalho’s assist gave those attacks a result, but Estoril could not turn its advantage in chance quality into another goal. The visitors’ 49 per cent possession was also above their average of 46.38 per cent, ranking fourth across eight matches. Their discipline was a positive: nine fouls, below an average of 11 and their second-lowest figure in that comparison. At the back, Joel Robles made three saves, but Estoril conceded twice. The match therefore offered a mixed picture: a strong attacking performance by their own season measures, without the finishing or defensive protection needed to earn a point.
The three highest-rated players on each side. The rating is out of 10 and grades everything a player did in the match; the small figure beside it is how far above or below that player’s own average for the season it was, so a 7.2 from a player who usually scores 6.4 is a big night, and green or red says which way.

THE PLAYERS
The ratings show who rose above his usual level
Ewerton was a key figure for Academico Viseu. His rating of 8.18 was 0.68 above his season average of 7.5, and he made eight saves. Kahraman also finished well above his own level: his 7.88 rating was 0.90 above his 6.98 average, alongside the opening goal. Messeguem’s winner came with a rating of 7.64, which was 0.96 above his average of 6.68. Correia’s assist accompanied a 7.01 rating, just 0.03 above his own average.
Estoril’s standout was Guitane. He scored and rated 7.89, a full 1.24 above his season average of 6.65. Carvalho’s assist came in a performance rated 7.4, 0.70 above his average of 6.7; he also made four key passes. Not every busy display brought a lift against a player’s own baseline. Robles rated 6.24, 0.76 below his average of 7, despite making three saves. Those comparisons give the goalscorers and creators their due, while showing why the goalkeeper’s individual rating was a difficult one.
DESERVED OR LUCKY
The numbers say Estoril’s defeat was harsh
Expected goals favour Estoril. They finished on 1.42 to Academico Viseu’s 0.81, and the expected-goals margin was minus 0.61 for the home team. The actual margin was plus one. Those measures disagree: the result went to the team with the lower expected-goals total. Estoril’s higher count of shots on target supports the view that it created the more convincing overall threat, while Academico Viseu’s two goals show that the visitors’ advantage did not decide the match.
The market reading points in the opposite direction from the chance data. One bookmaker’s recorded probability for an Academico Viseu win was 0.981, and the actual outcome was a home win. So the market strongly favoured the result that happened, while expected goals made Estoril the more likely side to feel aggrieved. The gap between those readings matters: Academico Viseu won, but the performance was not a clear sign that it controlled the better chances.
WHAT NEXT
The follow-up is about chance quality, not just shots
Academico Viseu can take the win and the late contribution from its substitutes, but its season comparison leaves a clear question: can it keep producing shots while raising the expected-goals return? Estoril has a different task in reading this result. Its best expected-goals and shots-on-target figures across the comparisons did not bring a point, so turning threat into goals remains central. The league positions in the supplied standings underline the contrast: Academico Viseu is eighth on 11 points, while Estoril is 18th on two.
The match does not settle whether either side’s numbers will become a pattern. It does give a useful set of measures to check next: whether Academico Viseu can improve the value of its attempts, whether Estoril can convert its on-target volume, and whether the late influence of Academico Viseu’s changes can be repeated.
