Alverca punished Famalicao’s possession with ruthless finishing
Famalicao had the ball, but Alverca found better chances and pulled away after half-time.
Famalicao saw more of the ball, but Alverca took the points with a 4-1 win. The key was not territory: Famalicao had 64 per cent possession and 13 shots, yet only two tested the goalkeeper. Alverca made its attacks count, creating far better chances and scoring three times after the break.
HOW IT UNFOLDED
Alverca turned a level game into a clear win
Alverca struck first through Chiquinho in the 14th minute, taking advantage before Famalicao had settled. Famalicao made an early change six minutes after going behind, with Leonardo Realpe replacing Matheus Mattara. Víctor Rofino equalised in the 39th minute, finishing a move assisted by Marcos Peña, and the teams went into half-time level.
The balance shifted again when Figueiredo put Alverca ahead in the 56th minute, assisted by Diogo Filipe Spencer Marques. Famalicao made three changes at 65 minutes while trailing, but Alverca stayed in front. Vivaldo Semedo made it 3-1 in the 77th minute, with Matheus Mendes providing the assist. André Vidigal then scored a penalty in the 85th minute. The scoreline grew, but the gap in chance quality had been clear throughout.

THE GOALS
Four different scorers reflected Alverca’s threat
Chiquinho’s opener came after Alverca had begun with purpose, and it put Famalicao under pressure early. Famalicao answered through Víctor Rofino, whose 39th-minute goal restored parity and gave the home side a way back into the match. Marcos Peña supplied the assist. That response mattered: Famalicao had struggled to make possession dangerous, but found a route through just before the break.
Figueiredo’s goal after half-time changed the contest again. Diogo Filipe Spencer Marques assisted, and Alverca’s lead put the pressure back on Famalicao to turn its possession into chances. Instead, Alverca extended the advantage when substitute Vivaldo Semedo scored, assisted by goalkeeper Matheus Mendes. André Vidigal added the fourth from the penalty spot. The finish was emphatic, but the underlying difference was already visible: Alverca reached better shooting positions more often.

Famalicao
Possession brought Famalicao little danger
Famalicao’s control of the ball was real. Its 64 per cent possession was its third-highest figure across eight matches, while its 13 shots also ranked third. It won eight corners, its second-highest total in that run. Those numbers point to sustained pressure, and Víctor Rofino’s equaliser showed Famalicao could turn one attack into a goal.
But the pressure did not produce enough clear attempts. Two shots on target was Famalicao’s sixth-ranked figure across eight matches, and five shots inside the box were close to its average of 4.75. Its expected goals total of 0.35 was fifth across six matches, well below its average of 0.94. Six efforts were blocked and eight came from outside the box. Alverca’s goalkeeper made one save; Famalicao’s made one too, a sign of how little the home side tested him. The issue was not the amount of possession, but what Famalicao did with it.
Alverca
Alverca traded the ball for better openings
Alverca had only 36 per cent possession, its seventh-ranked figure across eight matches and below its average of 42.75 per cent. That did not stop the visitors from creating danger. Their 14 shots and five shots on target were both third-highest totals in their eight matches so far. Nine attempts came from inside the box, also their third-highest mark.
The expected-goals figure makes the contrast sharper. Alverca’s 2.86 was its best across six matches and more than its average of 1.38. It had three corners, below its average of 4.75, so the threat came from open play as well as set-piece pressure. The visitors also committed 27 fouls, their highest total across eight matches and well above an average of 14.63. That is a clear cost in their approach, even on a night when their forward play was effective. Matheus Mendes made one save, matching Famalicao’s goalkeeper, but Alverca’s defence gave him less to handle.
The three highest-rated players on each side. The rating is out of 10 and grades everything a player did in the match; the small figure beside it is how far above or below that player’s own average for the season it was, so a 7.2 from a player who usually scores 6.4 is a big night, and green or red says which way.

THE PLAYERS
Alverca’s attackers rose above their usual level
Chiquinho rated 8.13, which was 1.02 above his own season average. He scored Alverca’s opener and completed two successful dribbles. Figueiredo’s rating of 8.05 was 1.14 above his average, and he scored the second goal. Both performances matched the impact of their goals: each helped Alverca take control at a key point.
Vivaldo Semedo rated 7.52, up 0.90 on his average, after coming on and scoring. For Famalicao, Marcos Peña rated 7.32, 0.32 above his average, and assisted Víctor Rofino’s equaliser. Rofino scored, but his 6.79 rating was 0.51 below his own average. Sorriso had the sharpest drop among Famalicao’s regular contributors here: his 5.80 rating was 1.61 below his average of 7.41. That contrast captures the teams’ different attacking returns without treating the final score as a measure of every individual.
DESERVED OR LUCKY
The scoreline was supported by the chance balance
Expected goals strongly favour Alverca’s win. Famalicao recorded 0.35, while Alverca reached 2.86. That is not a close reading of the chances: Alverca’s total was its best across six matches, while Famalicao’s was fifth across six. The actual margin was a three-goal win, against an expected-goals margin of 2.51 goals in Alverca’s favour. The gap between those measures means the scoreline was a little wider than the chance model suggests, but not a reversal of the match’s pattern. Famalicao’s possession and shot count did not amount to a case of misfortune; Alverca created the far better opportunities and earned the win.
WHAT NEXT
Famalicao’s next test is turning control into threat
Famalicao can take some comfort from the possession and corners, and from finding an equaliser before half-time. But the low expected-goals return and few shots on target make the main problem plain: control did not lead to enough danger. Alverca, meanwhile, showed it could do damage without dominating the ball. Its high expected-goals total came with a heavy foul count, so the balance between aggression and discipline remains part of the picture. The next matches will show whether these figures were a one-off or a pattern.
- Whether Famalicao can turn possession and corners into more shots on target.
- Whether Famalicao’s expected-goals figure moves back towards its average of 0.94.
- Whether Alverca can keep creating chances while reducing its fouls from this match’s total of 27.
