Arouca held firm as Estrela’s possession went unrewarded

Arouca made an early lead last, beating Estrela 1-0 despite having far less of the ball. Barbero scored in the fifth minute, and Estrela later missed a penalty. The visitors created the stronger expected-goals total, so this was not a night when Arouca dominated the chances. Their reward came from defending the lead that their one clear early opening gave them.

HOW IT UNFOLDED

Arouca struck before Estrela settled

The early goal changed the terms of the match. Arouca could protect a lead, while Estrela had to find a way through a compact contest. The possession figures show how much the visitors carried the ball: 63 per cent, against Arouca’s 37 per cent. But that control did not bring a steady flow of accurate attempts. Estrela finished with 11 shots and only two on target.

The most important chance to change the score came in first-half added time, when Ianis Stoica missed a penalty. That left Estrela behind at the break, and the second half became a test of whether their possession could produce a clearer threat. Arouca made their first change in the 57th minute; Estrela’s first came in the 61st. The score stayed at 1-0, and the visitors’ territorial advantage never became an equaliser.

THE GOALS

One early finish, one missed chance to respond

Arouca’s goal arrived in the fifth minute. Näis Djouahra supplied the assist, and Barbero scored. The data records it as a normal goal, without further detail on the finish. Its timing mattered: Arouca had the lead before Estrela had built the possession advantage that would define the wider match. From then on, the visitors had to turn their control into a goal rather than simply keep the ball.

Estrela’s best chance to answer came just before half-time, but Ianis Stoica missed a penalty. That is the sharpest contrast in the game: Arouca took their early opening, while Estrela left a major opportunity unused. The penalty miss did not erase Estrela’s later shot volume or expected-goals advantage. It did, however, mean the visitors entered the second half still needing to find a way past Ignacio de Arruabarrena, who made two saves.

Arouca

Arouca won with less of the ball and fewer chances

Arouca’s best work was in making the early goal count. They had 37 per cent possession, their lowest figure in eight matches compared with a season average of 49 per cent. Their seven shots were below their 10.5 average, and their expected goals of 0.78 sat below a 1.12 average. This was a win built without their usual level of attacking output, rather than a performance that overwhelmed Estrela.

There were still useful signs in the way Arouca defended their advantage. They allowed Estrela to take 11 shots but limited the visitors to two on target, and Ignacio de Arruabarrena made two saves. Arouca’s five corners were their highest total in eight matches, although their five shots from inside the box remained below a season average of 6.25. The result came from taking an early chance and resisting pressure, while the modest expected-goals figure shows how little margin they had for another concession.

Estrela

Estrela controlled the ball but lacked accuracy

Estrela did plenty of the carrying. Their 63 per cent possession was their highest in eight matches, well above a season average of 51.13 per cent. They also won six corners, their best mark across those eight games. Yet their 11 shots were below a 12.75 average, and their two shots on target were far short of a 4.13 average. The gap between ball control and accuracy is the clearest explanation for why they left empty-handed.

The quality of the chances points to a more complicated verdict than simply saying Estrela created nothing. They recorded 1.48 expected goals, above their 1.4 average and their second-highest figure across five matches compared. Six of their attempts came from inside the box, though that was below their 8.63 average. The missed penalty stands out, but Arouca’s goalkeeper still had to make two saves. Estrela had enough promise in the chance total; their lack of shots on target left that promise unfinished.

Who stood out

The three highest-rated players on each side. The rating is out of 10 and grades everything a player did in the match; the small figure beside it is how far above or below that player’s own average for the season it was, so a 7.2 from a player who usually scores 6.4 is a big night, and green or red says which way.

THE PLAYERS

Barbero and Djouahra made the difference

Barbero rated 7.47, which was 0.57 above his own season average. His goal was the decisive contribution, and he was replaced in the 65th minute. Näis Djouahra rated 7.7, 0.71 above his average, and assisted the winner before going off at the same time. Javi Sánchez also finished above his own level: 7.48 against an average of 7.01, with three interceptions.

For Estrela, Patrick Luan’s 7.2 rating was 1.94 above his average, while Santiago Serra rated 6.81, a rise of 1.74. Those strong individual readings did not change the score. Ianis Stoica rated 6.17 against his 7.19 average after missing the penalty, and Abraham Marcus rated 6.07 against an average of 7.52. The team’s possession was not matched by enough accurate finishing, and those two below-average ratings reflect a difficult attacking night for key contributors.

DESERVED OR LUCKY

The score favoured Arouca; the chance balance did not

Expected goals lean towards Estrela. Arouca recorded 0.78 against Estrela’s 1.48, giving an expected margin of minus 0.7 for the home side, even though the actual margin was plus one. On that measure, Arouca took more from the match than the chance balance suggests. The figures do not make the win undeserved: they show that Estrela generated the better expected return but did not turn it into a goal.

The market view pointed the other way. The recorded probabilities gave Arouca a 98.1 per cent chance of winning, with 1.9 per cent for a draw and none for Estrela. The result matched that strong pre-match expectation, while expected goals favoured the visitors. These measures disagree: the market backed Arouca, but the chance quality in the match leaned towards Estrela. Taken together, they make this a win that suited the pre-match outlook more than the chances created on the night.

WHAT NEXT

The next test is whether the patterns repeat

For Arouca, the result offers points and a clean sheet, but their attacking figures sat below their usual levels. Their 0.78 expected goals was also below a season average of 1.12. The win therefore does not settle whether they can create more while defending a lead; it shows they managed this match without needing a second goal.

Estrela can take encouragement from the possession and expected-goals totals, but two shots on target and a missed penalty explain the loss. The key question is whether that control can produce more accurate attempts next time. Three figures will help frame the next performances:

  • Whether Arouca’s possession rises from 37 per cent towards their 49 per cent season average.
  • Whether Estrela can improve on two shots on target against a 4.13 season average.
  • Whether Arouca’s expected goals move back towards their 1.12 average after finishing on 0.78.
