GIL Vicente had the better chances, but no breakthrough
GIL Vicente edged the chance-quality battle, but managed only one shot on target as Vitória SC also failed to turn possession into a goal.
GIL Vicente and Vitória SC shared a goalless draw, but the numbers point to a narrow difference beneath the scoreline: the hosts created the better chance quality. That did not become control of the match. GIL Vicente put only one shot on target, while Vitória SC also fell well short of their usual attacking output.
HOW IT UNFOLDED
A slight edge never became a spell of control
The match finished as it began: 0-0, with neither side finding a goal to change the shape of the contest. Vitória SC had a little more of the ball, with 52 per cent possession to GIL Vicente’s 48, but the visitors’ greater share did not bring their normal volume of attacks. Their 11 shots were well below a season average of 16.9.
GIL Vicente’s clearest advantage came in expected goals, where their 0.67 was above Vitória SC’s 0.48. Yet the hosts also produced only one shot on target, against an average of 3.3. There was no goal to mark a turning point. The late changes came with the score still level: both teams made substitutions around the 75th and 76th minutes, then Vitória SC made two more at 90 minutes.

THE GOALS
No goal arrived to turn pressure into a result
There were no goals to explain, and that absence was the match’s defining detail. GIL Vicente had the stronger expected-goals figure, but their attack did not convert that edge into repeated efforts on target. Ten shots included six from inside the box, yet only one tested the goalkeeper. That gap between getting into shooting positions and making the goalkeeper work left their advantage fragile.
Vitória SC’s route to a goal was no more convincing. They had six shots from inside the box, but their total of two on target was less than half their season average of 4.3. Three attempts were blocked, and three of their 11 shots came from outside the box. The figures describe attacks that reached promising areas without producing a decisive finish. With neither side able to add a goal, the late substitutions could only alter the personnel, not the score.

GIL Vicente
GIL Vicente made more of the openings, not enough of them
GIL Vicente’s strongest case is the gap in expected goals. Their 0.67 was above Vitória SC’s 0.48, even though both sides recorded six shots from inside the box. The hosts also had 10 shots overall, but that was below their average of 12.7 and ranked fifth among their 10 matches so far. Their 48 per cent possession sat below a 51.2 per cent average, ranking sixth of 10.
The sharper concern is how little of that attacking work reached the target. GIL Vicente’s one shot on target was 2.3 below their average of 3.3 and ranked ninth of 10, their second-lowest return in that comparison. Six shots came from inside the box, also below their 7.7 average. Lucão made two saves, while GIL Vicente’s goalkeeper faced two shots on target. The side kept the visitors out, but the attacking numbers explain why a better expected-goals figure did not bring a win.
Vitória SC
Vitória SC kept the hosts quiet but lacked their usual threat
Vitória SC can take something from restricting GIL Vicente to one shot on target. The visitors had 52 per cent possession and completed 361 of 431 passes, but their share of the ball did not translate into the attacks they usually produce. Their 11 shots were 5.9 below their average of 16.9, ranking eighth among their 10 matches so far. Their three corners were also below an average of 5.5.
The attacking shortfall was clearest in the quality and accuracy of the attempts. Vitória SC’s expected goals of 0.48 were well below their 1.54 average, while their two shots on target were 2.3 below their 4.3 average. Both figures ranked eighth of 10 in their comparisons. Lucas Furtado made one save, and the defence allowed only one shot on target. But their six shots inside the box were far below a 10.6 average. The clean sheet was useful; the lack of threat meant there was little chance to turn it into more.
The three highest-rated players on each side. The rating is out of 10 and grades everything a player did in the match; the small figure beside it is how far above or below that player’s own average for the season it was, so a 7.2 from a player who usually scores 6.4 is a big night, and green or red says which way.

THE PLAYERS
The ratings show who held their level and who fell short
For GIL Vicente, Ricardo Esgaio rated 7.32, which was 0.32 above his own season average. Lucão’s 7.17 was 0.05 above his average, and his two saves helped keep the visitors scoreless. Diogo Ferreira Prioste rated 7.02, but that was 0.12 below his average. The sharpest falls among the hosts came from Murilo, 0.6 below his average, and Walace, whose 5.86 rating was 0.6 below his 6.46 average.
Vitória SC’s best comparison was Ahmed Sidibé: his 7.07 rating stood 1.7 above his own average of 5.37. João Mendes was 0.28 above his average, while Tony Strata was 0.11 above. At the other end, Arnel Jakupovic rated 6.06, which was 1.05 below his average of 7.11. Oumar Camara was 0.5 below his average despite taking six shots, only one of them on target. The contrast underlines the teams’ shared problem: individual effort did not bring enough accurate finishing.
DESERVED OR LUCKY
The chance figures favour GIL Vicente; the market strongly favoured a draw
Expected goals give GIL Vicente a small edge: 0.67 to 0.48, a margin of 0.19. The actual margin was zero, so the hosts did not get the win their chance-quality advantage might suggest. But that does not make the draw a clear case of bad luck. GIL Vicente’s 0.67 expected goals remained well below their 1.21 average, and their single shot on target shows how little they made the goalkeeper intervene.
The market measure points in the same direction as the final score, but much more strongly: the draw had a probability of 0.968 from one bookmaker. That is a striking contrast with the expected-goals reading, which gives GIL Vicente the better attacking return. Taken together, the evidence says the hosts had a modest edge in chance quality, while the market had heavily favoured a draw. Neither side produced the attacking output that would make the result feel like a major injustice.
WHAT NEXT
The attacking numbers are the clearest test for both teams
The draw gives each side a different attacking question to carry forward. GIL Vicente’s chance-quality edge was real, but their shot-on-target total was their second-worst among 10 matches so far. Vitória SC had the larger possession share, yet their expected goals and shots on target both ranked eighth in their 10-match comparisons. The clean sheets offer evidence of defensive organisation, but neither side can take the scoreline alone as proof that the attack worked.
The late changes did not alter the 0-0 score. GIL Vicente made three substitutions at 76 minutes and two more at 84 minutes; Vitória SC began their changes at 75 minutes and made two further substitutions at 90 minutes. What would change the reading of this match is a return to each team’s usual attacking output. The useful checks are:
- Whether GIL Vicente lift their shots on target from one towards their average of 3.3.
- Whether Vitória SC recover from 0.48 expected goals towards their average of 1.54.
- Whether Vitória SC bring their shots inside the box closer to their average of 10.6.
