Rio Ave had the ball; Famalicao had the cutting edge
Rio Ave's season-high possession brought little threat. Famalicao turned a tight game into a 4-0 win with a ruthless late burst.
Famalicao won 4-0 at Rio Ave, turning a goalless first half into a scoreline that looked nothing like the chances created. Rio Ave had 58 per cent possession, their highest share across nine matches, but managed only two shots on target. Famalicao’s finishing made the difference: their expected-goals total was 0.93, yet they scored four.
HOW IT UNFOLDED
Rio Ave controlled the ball, then lost control of the game
The first half ended without a goal, and Rio Ave had more of the ball. Their 58 per cent possession was 12 points above their average of 46 per cent, and their best mark across nine matches. But the control did not bring a steady stream of chances. Rio Ave managed seven shots, below their average of 7.56, and their two efforts on target were one fewer than usual.
Roméo Beney broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half, with Rodrigo Pinheiro providing the assist. Famalicao’s lead remained one goal until Pedro Santos scored in the 80th minute, assisted by Sorriso. Then Óscar Aranda scored twice, first from Pedro Santos’s assist and then from a penalty in added time. Rio Ave had been behind for 17 minutes before their first changes at 65 minutes; by the time they made further changes, the score had moved to 2-0.

THE GOALS
A quiet first half gave way to a decisive finish
Beney’s goal at 48 minutes changed the terms of the match. The score had been level at half-time, but now Rio Ave had to chase an equaliser. The assist came from Pinheiro, whose contribution mattered again in the game’s defining moment: it was his delivery that set up the opening goal. The available figures do not describe the shot itself, but they show how little separated the teams before Famalicao found the breakthrough.
The second goal arrived in the 80th minute, when Sorriso assisted Pedro Santos. That made it 2-0 and shifted the match from a close contest into one Rio Ave had to recover quickly. Famalicao added a third five minutes later through Óscar Aranda, assisted by Pedro Santos. Aranda then converted a penalty in added time. The late goals widened the margin sharply, but they came after Rio Ave had already failed to turn possession into sustained pressure.

Rio Ave
Rio Ave’s possession was real; the threat was not
Rio Ave’s best feature was their ability to keep the ball. They completed 464 of 535 passes, and their possession share was 58 per cent, 12 points above their nine-match average. That was a season high, but it brought no rise in attacking output. Seven shots ranked fourth among their nine matches, while two on target ranked sixth. Their three shots inside the box were just below the average of 3.22.
The expected-goals figure tells a similar story. Rio Ave’s 0.66 was almost exactly their average of 0.67 across seven compared matches, rather than a clear underperformance in chance creation. They had four shots from outside the box and two efforts blocked; only two reached the target. Vitor Hugo made one save, while Famalicao goalkeeper Lazar Carević made two. Rio Ave also committed 21 fouls, their highest total across nine matches and more than double their average of 10.22. The ball was theirs more often than usual, but not in areas that brought enough danger.
Famalicao
Famalicao made less of the ball and much more of their chances
Famalicao had 42 per cent possession, 11.78 points below their average of 53.78. That was their second-lowest share across nine matches. They did not need long spells on the ball to create attempts: 11 shots were above their average of 10.11, and five came from inside the box, just above their average of 4.78. Four shots on target was their second-best total in nine matches, and one more than their average.
Their expected-goals figure, 0.93, was almost level with their average of 0.94 across seven compared matches. That makes the four goals stand out: the finishing was far more productive than the chances alone would suggest. Famalicao blocked three shots and allowed Rio Ave only two saves from Carević, who made two. Their two corners were well below an average of 5.33, and their 15 fouls were above their average of 12.11. This was not a match built on winning every measure. Famalicao’s advantage was that they made their attacking moments count.
The three highest-rated players on each side. The rating is out of 10 and grades everything a player did in the match; the small figure beside it is how far above or below that player’s own average for the season it was, so a 7.2 from a player who usually scores 6.4 is a big night, and green or red says which way.

THE PLAYERS
Beney and Santos turned the numbers into goals
Roméo Beney rated 8.2, 1.78 above his season average of 6.42. He scored Famalicao’s opener and had one shot, which was on target. Pedro Santos came off the bench and rated 7.66, 1.17 above his average of 6.49. He scored the second goal and assisted Aranda’s first, a direct contribution to two of Famalicao’s goals.
Sorriso’s 7.7 rating was 0.49 above his average of 7.21. He assisted Santos and created two key passes, while winning nine of his 12 duels. Rodrigo Pinheiro rated 7.04, 0.22 above his average, and recorded an assist on the opening goal. For Rio Ave, Georgios Liavas was 0.27 above his average of 6.42, while Andreas-Richardos Ntoi was 0.2 above his average of 6.51. Jalen Blesa, usually at 7.19, rated 6.33 despite putting both his shots on target. Vitor Hugo’s 5.53 was 1.86 below his 7.39 average, after he made one save and conceded four.
DESERVED OR LUCKY
The scoreline ran well ahead of the chance balance
Expected goals put the match close: Rio Ave recorded 0.66 and Famalicao 0.93, an expected margin of 0.27 in Famalicao’s favour. The actual margin was four goals. Both teams were close to their expected-goals averages, which makes the gap between chances and outcome the central finding. Famalicao scored with unusual efficiency; Rio Ave did not create enough to make their possession count.
The supplied result probabilities also favoured Famalicao, but only at 0.402. A draw was rated at 0.35 and a Rio Ave win at 0.248. That gives independent support to Famalicao being the more likely winner, but not to a four-goal margin. The evidence points to a deserved win in the broad sense, with the final score made far more emphatic by finishing than by the quality of chances.
WHAT NEXT
The next test is turning possession into a sharper threat
For Rio Ave, the concern is not simply that they lost by four. Their possession was at a season high, yet their shots on target were below average and their expected goals sat almost exactly at the level they usually produce. That combination points to a team that had the ball without making the match feel dangerous enough. Their recent results include wins of 1-0 and 3-2, followed by a 0-1 defeat, a 3-3 draw and this loss.
Famalicao can take confidence from converting chances, while keeping the expected-goals figure in view: 0.93 was close to their average, not a sign of overwhelming chance volume. Their previous five results included a 4-0 win, two draws, and defeats of 0-1 and 1-4. The question raised by this match is whether the balance between modest possession and sharp finishing can hold. Three details will help show what changes:
- Whether Rio Ave can turn possession above their 46 per cent average into more than their usual three shots on target.
- Whether Famalicao can maintain a shots-on-target figure above their 3.33 average while taking fewer corners than their 5.33 average.
- Whether Rio Ave’s foul count moves back towards its 10.22 average after reaching 21 against Famalicao.
