Shakhtar and Sporting meet with very different attacking profiles

Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting CP arrive at Stamford Bridge with different ways of building danger. Sporting have taken more shots and created more expected goals across their measured matches, while Shakhtar’s results have been tougher than their chance figures suggest. The contest may turn on whether Shakhtar can disrupt Sporting’s attack without giving up space to Luis Suárez.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

Two points separate them, but the venue splits matter

Sporting CP sit 12th in the 36-team league-stage table with six points from three matches. Shakhtar Donetsk are 17th with four points from three. The gap is small, but the home and away records offer different clues about this fixture. Shakhtar have won their only home match, beating AEK Athens FC 3-1. Their two away matches brought one draw and one defeat, with a single goal scored.

Sporting’s only away match so far brought a 2-0 win and a clean sheet. Their home record is less steady: one win and one defeat, with five goals scored and four conceded. Shakhtar need to turn their home strength into another result, while Sporting will want to carry their away form into a different ground. Both have lost once in the league stage, so the chance to add points matters to each side’s position.

Recent form

Each side’s last five results, the latest at the top. W is a win, D a draw, L a defeat. The score is their goals first, then the opponent’s; “v” means they were at home, “at” that they were away.

TEAM NEWS

UEFA’s focus is on Suárez and Shakhtar’s response

UEFA’s Matchday 4 preview says both clubs are looking to recover from their first Champions League defeats of the campaign. It notes that Shakhtar’s 0-1 loss at ten-man Inter was only their fourth defeat in their last 13 UEFA competition matches, alongside six wins and three draws. That wider record gives context, but Shakhtar still need a response after losing their latest match.

UEFA also highlights Luis Suárez, whose goals in three consecutive Champions League appearances equal the Sporting record held by Sá Pinto and Nani. The player figures show four goals from 11 shots, seven on target, in 249 minutes. UEFA says another goal would set a new Sporting club record for consecutive scoring appearances and equal Luis Díaz’s Colombian mark of four. Shakhtar have their own attacking reference: Gleiker Mendoza has scored twice in 93 minutes across two appearances.

HOW THEY'VE BEEN PLAYING

Recent wins have lifted Sporting; Shakhtar’s latest result was a setback

Shakhtar’s latest result was a 0-1 defeat away to Inter, after a 3-1 home win over AEK Athens FC and a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven. Before those matches came two defeats to FC Porto. Their five-match sample includes opponents ranked 21st, 29th, 18th and 34th in the data, so the run has not come against one level of opposition. Across three measured matches, Shakhtar’s expected-goal margin was -0.66, while their actual goal margin was -3. Their results have been worse than that chance measure suggests.

Sporting’s most recent results show two wins: 2-0 away to Casa Pia and 2-1 at home to Maritimo. Those followed home defeats to Academico Viseu and Lask Linz, then away wins over Lens and SC Braga. Their European opponents in that run were ranked 24th and 27th. Across five measured matches, Sporting’s expected-goal margin was 5.02 and their actual margin was 5. That close match between chances and outcomes suggests their strong return has reflected the opportunities created, rather than a large finishing bonus.

THE MATCH-UP

Sporting’s shot volume tests Shakhtar’s defensive shape

The profiles point towards Sporting having more of the ball and asking more questions with it. Across five measured matches, Sporting average 56.6 per cent possession, 17.4 shots and 5.4 shots on target. Their expected-goals average is 2.12. Shakhtar’s three-match sample is more modest: 51.7 per cent possession, 10.7 shots and 1.00 expected goals per match. Sporting’s figures suggest a busier attacking approach, but Shakhtar have still been close to an even share of possession.

That makes the space around Shakhtar’s midfield important. Marlon Gomes has three key passes and 15 tackles in 261 minutes, so his work can matter both when Shakhtar try to create and when they try to stop Sporting building. Luis Suárez brings the clearest scoring threat for Sporting, with four goals and seven shots on target. Shakhtar’s Alisson Santana has three tackles in 176 minutes; if he can interrupt Sporting’s forward play, Suárez may have fewer clean chances. Sporting’s Eduardo Quaresma has seven tackles in 174 minutes, another figure to watch as Shakhtar look for ways through.

When they score and concede

When in a match each side’s goals have come this season, in fifteen-minute slices. Green is goals they scored in that part of the game, red is goals they let in. A tall green bar at the end is a side that finishes strongly; red at the start, slow starters.

THE HISTORY

Old meetings favour Sporting, including on Shakhtar’s ground

UEFA says the clubs’ only previous meetings came in the 2008/09 Champions League group stage. Sporting won 1-0 away and 1-0 at home, so the record includes a win at each venue. That away result is the more relevant detail for this fixture, although the match is now being played at Stamford Bridge.

UEFA also reports that Sporting have not lost to Ukrainian opposition in eight UEFA matches, winning seven and drawing one. They have won all four of their Champions League proper matches against Ukrainian clubs. Shakhtar’s wider record against Portuguese opposition offers a different note: none of their 22 UEFA matches against Portuguese teams has finished goalless. These records set the backdrop, but the previous Shakhtar-Sporting meetings were two close games decided by a single goal.

WHAT COMES NEXT

Sporting return to league action sooner

Sporting CP’s next listed fixture is in the Primeira Liga, 4.1 days after this match. That short gap puts a domestic commitment close behind their European trip, though it does not say who will play or how Rui Borges will manage the squad.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s next listed fixture is another UEFA Champions League match, 22.1 days later. That gives Shakhtar a much longer interval before their next listed game than Sporting have. The immediate task for both is still this league-stage meeting: Sporting will want to maintain their position above Shakhtar, while the hosts have the chance to build on their home win.

THREE THINGS TO WATCH

Three details could shape the match

The numbers point to three useful threads to follow as the game develops: Sporting’s early threat, Shakhtar’s late scoring periods and the midfield work around Suárez.

  • Sporting have scored twice in the opening 15 minutes and twice between minutes 16 and 30. See whether that early scoring pattern brings pressure on Shakhtar from the start.
  • Shakhtar’s goals have come in the 31-45 and 76-90 periods, with two in each. Their ability to create late in either half could matter if Sporting’s attack forces them to chase the game.
  • Luis Suárez has four goals and seven shots on target, while Shakhtar’s Alisson Santana has three tackles in 176 minutes. Watch whether Shakhtar can disrupt Suárez’s involvement without losing their own attacking outlet.
