Shakhtar had the chances; Sporting took the point that mattered

Shakhtar Donetsk lost 1-0 to Sporting CP, despite having more possession, more shots and the higher expected-goals figure. Issa Doumbia’s 59th-minute goal decided a match in which Shakhtar created their sharpest attacking performance of the campaign so far, but could not make it count. The result points to a finishing problem, not a lack of opportunity.

HOW IT UNFOLDED

A match shaped by pressure and one breakthrough

Shakhtar Donetsk had 54 per cent possession and 14 shots, while Sporting CP managed 10. The hosts also won seven corners to Sporting’s two. But neither side scored in the first half, and the match stayed finely balanced until Doumbia broke through in the 59th minute.

That goal changed the task for Shakhtar. They were behind for eight minutes before their first substitutions, with Newertton and Isaque entering in the 67th minute. Shakhtar kept trying: their total of 14 shots was their highest across four matches so far, as were their four shots on target. Sporting, meanwhile, had to defend a lead rather than chase one. Rui Silva made three saves, while Dmytro Riznyk made one at the other end. The numbers show Shakhtar kept the pressure on, but Sporting protected the advantage that mattered.

THE GOALS

Doumbia’s goal put the burden on Shakhtar

The match’s only goal came in the 59th minute, when Issa Doumbia scored for Sporting CP. The record identifies the scorer and the minute, and the effect is clear: Sporting moved ahead after a goalless first half, leaving Shakhtar to find an answer. There was no second goal to change the shape of the contest.

Shakhtar had eight shots inside the box and four on target, yet their expected-goals total was 1.97. That combination suggests the hosts found promising positions and made Sporting work, but did not turn those chances into a goal. Sporting also had eight shots inside the box, from 10 attempts overall, and scored from one of them. Their own expected-goals figure was 1.24. Doumbia’s finish therefore carried extra weight: it was enough to separate two sides who both found routes into the area, but only one of whom found the net.

Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar’s clearest chances still brought no reward

Shakhtar Donetsk can take encouragement from the volume and quality of their attack. Their 14 shots, four on target, eight shots inside the box and seven corners were all their highest figures across four matches so far. Their 54 per cent possession was also their second-highest of those four games. Expected goals tell a similar story: 1.97 was their best return across the three matches compared for that measure, above their average of 1.33.

The weakness was that the attacking work produced no goal. Four shots on target from 14 attempts is a better return than Shakhtar’s average of 3.5 shots on target across four matches, but Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva still made three saves. Shakhtar’s eight shots inside the box show they were not limited to hopeful efforts from distance; six attempts came from outside it, and two were blocked. Dmytro Riznyk made one save, so Shakhtar were not undone by a goalkeeping performance that had to withstand a barrage. Their own goalkeeper had little to do, while the side’s best chance-making display of the campaign ended in defeat.

Sporting CP

Sporting defended the lead after a quieter attack

Sporting CP did not control possession or produce their usual attacking volume. Their 46 per cent possession was their second-highest across four matches so far, but below their average of 47.5 per cent. Their 10 shots were below an average of 11.25, and their three on target were their lowest figure across those four matches. Expected goals fell to 1.24, also the lowest of four, against an average of 1.99.

Still, Sporting created eight shots inside the box, above their average of 7.5 across four matches. They needed only one of those chances to score, then relied on Rui Silva, whose three saves helped preserve the lead. Sporting’s 18 fouls were their highest figure of the campaign so far, and their two corners were below their average of 3.25. That points to a more disrupted, defensive evening than their season norm. The result came not from their usual level of attacking output, but from taking the decisive chance and holding firm when Shakhtar pressed.

Who stood out

The three highest-rated players on each side. The rating is out of 10 and grades everything a player did in the match; the small figure beside it is how far above or below that player’s own average for the season it was, so a 7.2 from a player who usually scores 6.4 is a big night, and green or red says which way.

THE PLAYERS

Strong individual displays could not shift the score

Issa Doumbia’s goal made him Sporting’s decisive player, and his rating was 8.2. The data gives no season rating for him, so that figure is best read as a match mark rather than a comparison with his usual level. Gonçalo Inácio rated 7.41, against his own season average of 6.75, while making five of his eight duels won and one key pass.

For Shakhtar, Pedrinho rated 7.29, above his 6.91 season average, and recorded 46 accurate passes from 50. Oleh Ocheretko’s 7.18 was 0.58 above his own average of 6.6; he also won five of eight duels and made four tackles. Sporting’s Luis Suárez, by contrast, rated 6.48 against an average of 8, a drop of 1.52. He had three shots but none on target. The contrast captures the match: Shakhtar’s midfielders delivered above their own usual marks, while the winning goal came from a Sporting player whose individual figure cannot be judged against a supplied season average.

DESERVED OR LUCKY

The chance count favoured Shakhtar, the result did not

Expected goals strongly favour Shakhtar’s account of the performance. Their 1.97 against Sporting’s 1.24 gave Shakhtar an expected margin of 0.73, while the actual margin was minus one. The gap between the two measures is a clear sign that the team with the better expected-goals return did not get the result its chances suggested.

The recorded market probabilities also favoured Sporting’s win, at 98.4 per cent, but that snapshot was observed after kick-off and cannot serve as a pre-match judgement. It is not independent evidence that Sporting were expected to win beforehand. The match evidence points the other way: Shakhtar had the stronger expected-goals figure, while Sporting took the goal and made their lead stand. Shakhtar were unlucky in the outcome, but the score still reflects the one chance that became a goal.

WHAT NEXT

The next test is turning good work into goals

Shakhtar Donetsk leave this match with proof that they can create more than their recent average, but no points to show for it. Their 1.97 expected goals and season-best shot totals make the defeat harder to explain as a poor attacking performance. The open question is whether that level of chance creation can become goals, rather than another strong set of figures without a reward.

Sporting CP, meanwhile, won despite recording their lowest expected-goals figure and fewest shots on target across four matches so far. Their defence and Rui Silva’s three saves mattered as much as Doumbia’s finish. Sporting’s standing was 12th on six points, while Shakhtar were 17th on four points; the win gave Sporting the more useful result, but neither side’s next match is supplied here. Three details from this game are worth carrying forward:

  • Whether Shakhtar can turn a season-best 1.97 expected goals into an actual goal.
  • Whether Sporting can lift their shots-on-target figure from a season-low three across four matches so far.
  • Whether Sporting can keep protecting leads when their expected-goals figure falls below its 1.99 average.
